Dear TalkBAC
We picked up this website in Italy so now you all have an international
audience. I saw a picture of my mum, Betty, very glam. Our Italian friends
appreciated the gallery too. Well done! An interesting website. Evviva Betty!

Dear TalkBAC. I have acquired some watercolour paintings and Lithographs by John Gauld. The Lithographs were done in about 1914 when John was studying at the Royal College. Could you tell me if they are of any value as i am in the process of renewing my house insurance. Yours Sincerely. Derek Trotter. 14 December 2002.
Hi Derek,
Thanks for your email.
I have asked various of our
members about your query. This has revealed that some of them also have
John Gauld's pictures.
However, nobody seems to
know what value to put on them. The general consensus is that you could
send photos of them to Phillip's or Sotheby's (via the Internet) and
seek their opinion.
I would be interested
to know how you go on if you'd like to let me know the results of your
enquiries. Hon. Sec.

Dear TalkBAC, I thought you might find the picture of Ellen interesting. I believe she was A Life Model, for the Bolton Art Circle. The picture is on the front cover from a book of her poetry, titled "Thorn is the Rose". P Battersby 17 December 2002
Thanks for the picture of Ellen Bate. I found it very interesting. It has brought back many memories of Ellen; and not only as a model. Some of our members remember her. I shall place the picture onto our History page. Hon. Sec. |

Dear TalkBac, I was delighted to view your website and particularly the
picture of one of the artists, my Uncle, Eric Tatton. We really
love his art and proudly hang his pictures in our home in
Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada.

Dear TalkBAC, I recently inherited an oil painting by Jack Hammill and so would like a copy of the talk you had on his work. If this is not available might I have information on how to reach the author of that talk. With much thanks. Professor Paul Cohen 10 August 2003 Sorry Paul, but we don't keep transcripts of our talks and demonstrations, but I'll send you his phone no. Hon. Sec. |

Dear TalkBac, I am very impressed by the standard of all your artists shown on your website. As a very amateur, amateur I went on your site after reading about you in Leisure Painter. How I wish I lived nearer to Bolton as I did 70-odd years ago (born in Tyldesley) so that I could perhaps learn more than I do now. Good luck to all of you. Sheila McLoughlin 11 August 2003 |

Hello there. I live in Canada just outside of Toronto. My Mother inherited a painting which I now have and she has given it to me the other day, entitled --- " Windermere From Milbeckstock # 3...by W. Dyke Carter A.R.C.A. (Lord) Lancaster Royal Grammar School...framed by Boots picture framing dept. 1956 I love this picture and when my mother went to England to see to the inheritance of a relative that left personal belongings to my Mum, she brought back this piece of work. It has always been in their hallway. Now my parents have gone to a Seniors Retirement Residence both at the age of 90. I would like to know what this is picture is worth, and more about it. I have been in the internet and found out he W. Dyke Carter belonged to the Bolton Art Circle, and see that his name is mentioned there. Both sets of my grandparents came from England, and so their relatives are few there now, but a couple still remain. Please information regarding this piece of work would greatly be appreciated.
Thanking you in advance. Yours very truly, Lyn Hunter 29 August 2003 A reply to this enquiry was received on 3rd June 2004; as follows:- I would like to reply to Lyn Hunter 29 August 2003. It was regards to the painting of Windermere from Milbeckstock in Bowness Windermere.

Dear TalkBAC, We called in the exhibition yesterday at Bolton Museum. Your exhibition is a credit to you. It is wonderful. We were very taken by Irene smith's "The Waders" but didn't like the frame. Would it be possible to have it changed? I have been taking art lessons now for some twelve months and love every minute of it. Many thanks and congratulations again on a really top class show. John Bullen. 22nd October 2003 I attend a painting class at Westhoughton centre and your exhibition was given rave reviews by other attendees last week. John Bullen

Dear TalkBAC,
With interest, I found reference to Ron Close's
"naval background". My father had a cousin, Harold Close, who was
Lieutenant Commander, HMS Esperance Bay, Royal Naval Reserve. Harold was
born 12 June 1902 in Bolton, and died 14 July 1940.
I am in Tasmania now since 1955, but was born
in Bolton. I wonder if anyone knowing Ron would know if we are related,
and whether Ron has any living relatives? I would love to swap family
information.

Hello George and Roland, I was just clicking away on the web after work when I brought up your website. My father was John Nicholson who was long connected with the Art Circle. It was wonderful to read through all the stuff you have on the site, it brought back many memories - names of people I remember, demonstration nights given by my father I attended, the exhibitions etc. I am delighted that the Circle my father so loved and was so proud of, continues to prosper and give so much enjoyment to so many. I am afraid that my connections with Bolton have dwindled through working many years in Liverpool, and now have practically broken as I am now the Workshop/Studio Manager at Coventry University School of Art & Design. I read the Evening News on the Web, watch Bolton play on Match of the Day but alas don't get much chance to visit the town and my friends I have there. I hope when I retire in 7 years I may come back to live in the town. I know that I will find a thriving Art Circle still carrying on for me to join! May I extend my congratulations to you and all the Circle on your continued success and wish you the very best of New Years, and for all the future. Best Regards Robert Nicholson 5 January 2005 |

Dear TalkBAC I bought a wonderful watercolour of a Barn Owl by John Selby many years ago and would like another of his works. Can you let me have a contact for him please. Sincerely, Eric Williams 6 March 2005
I am told by another artist, Stanley Warburton of
Lytham St Annes, that John may be contacted via Alston Hall ( see http://www.alstonhall.com/
)
Stanley did a demonstration for our Circle last
Tuesday and said that that would probably be the best way forward for you.
Kind regards, Editor 13 March 2005 |

Warmest greetings from Christchurch New Zealand. My cousin in Bolton sent me some postcards of Brian Barlow's paintings of Bolton scenes, are they available to view on a web site? Kind Regards Eddie McCoy 5 March 2005 Yes! I've just published a page of Brian Barlow's pictures. Hon Sec -------------------------- Many

Dear TalkBAC
Amongst my father's estate I have found two water
colours of cathedrals (Lincoln & York) both dated 70 and I wonder if your
ex president John Gauld painted such subjects? The signature has
no initial and this too could help me find out if it is your John Gauld.
If you get a moment, perhaps you could let me have your
thoughts on this and then I can decide what to do with these items.
Thank you in advance
