Over
200 invited Guests attended our Preview for the 2008
"Biennial" Exhibition on 19th September. The Mayor of Bolton,
Councillor O'Connell attended briefly and declared the Exhibition open.
As the prizes were awarded, an Art Gallery Exhibitions
Officer projected images of the pictures in
the Lecture Theatre with a PowerPoint presentation.
Thanks
to all who took part in our 2008 exhibition. Of the 125
entries, all of which were of sufficient quality to be
hung, 83 were
chosen . This was the magic number decreed by gallery
management. Our judge, Mr Roland Arthur, had a very
difficult task in winnowing the entries down to this low
number. However he did it, and selected prize winners,
and gave high commendations to 13 other pictures without
suffering a nervous breakdown!. He deserves our very
grateful thanks.
The
exhibition was visited by an average of 20 to 30 people
per day, most of whom had something interesting and
positive to say to our artists in residence and six of
them actually bought a picture! Some 659 visitors
voted for their favourite picture and
the most popular was Harold Sharrocks
“Reflections” with 6% of the vote. All but 12
received at least 1 vote – whose relations didn't
support them?
In order of popularity, the top
ten artists were:- Harold
Sharrocks
Margaret Greenwood
Paul Gerrard
Michael Brannan
George Pott
Aruna Mene
Anna Chadwick
Graham Savage
Roland Arthur
Czeslawa Manifold
N.B.
The most popular photograph only received as many votes
as Czeslawa.
45
members sat in the exhibition for some part of most of
the 55 days and produced 32 works of art in a quite
astonishing range of medium, style and subject. Well
done to all.
